Overview
Internship
During Summmer 2023, amidst a global IT recession, I got the opportunity to intern as a User Experience Designer on Staples OMNI App. My 3 month long intern project revolved around researching, designing, prototyping and testing onboarding experiences to make a unified app Home Page that combined shopping (staples.com) and rewards (staples connect) experiences.
Experience
The summer was all about learning how one of the most popular ecommerce organisations in the world solves problems at scale. I spent my free time getting mentored by Senior UX Designer - Warren Croce and networking with designers, researchers, engineers, and managers from various sections of team to learn more about their working style and favourite parts of their job.
Effective Remote Communication
Mastering diverse communication tools, I developed clear and concise communication skills for efficient virtual collaboration. This included adapting to the challenges of remote work, such as coordinating tasks and sharing updates through platforms like JiraNet, Kanban and Microsoft Teams.
Presentation Skills and Tools
Enhancing my virtual presentation skills, I became adept at creating engaging presentations for communicating design concepts and updates to the entire team. Additionally, I explored and utilized various digital collaboration tools for remote workshops and ideation, embracing technologies that facilitate effective virtual collaboration and productivity.
Team Dynamics and Collaboration
Successfully navigating time zones and diverse schedules, I learned to foster collaboration and trust within a remote team. Engaging in real-time collaborative problem-solving, I leveraged team strengths to address challenges, contributing to a cohesive virtual work environment.
Learnings
This internship taught me a lot about embracing ambiguity, asking the right questions, how to increase engagement for ecommerce, and finding impact.
Outcome
The biggest outcome of my project was achieving positive feedback on the redesign from usertesting, and inclusion in the pitch and upcoming launch roadmap. Outside of my immediate project, I also attended and participated in Fullstory management and accessibility workshops that enabled UX Designers on our team to accustom to the latest developments of fullstory software and create accessible inclusive designs.
All of my work during the internship is under an NDA, so please reach out to me personally if you have any questions regarding my work.
Suzanne Lunny, UX Manager at Staples
Mehika's approach showed sound judgement based on the available data and information we had to share. Her design was creative, and she clearly and confidently articulated her design rationale to various members of the team. I appreciated her initiative in making suggestions to improve other aspects of the app as well.
I truly enjoyed having Mehika as part of the team and would happily welcome her back if the interest and opportunity should align!
Warren Croce, UX Professional at Staples
"Mehika is a conscientious and thoughtful designer, and most importantly a good person. I only learned at the end of her internship that she probably knows more about accessibility than anyone on our UX team team, save for maybe our Director.”
